A.J. Croce Birmingham reviews
Good performance marred by poor sound mix
On this particular evening, Cheap Trick stood out as the standout act, delivering a stellar set that included covers by The Velvet Underground and The Beatles. The band still sounds great with high energy.
A hit-studded set was played by A.J. Croce to an enthusiastic Boston crowd. They opened with Under Pressure and covered all eras of their 50 year history.
The mix was sadly muddy, with low frequency distortion marring the sound. Billy Gibbons’ vocals were barely audible at times.
The performance itself was good, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that they were just going through the motions for most of the evening. I would have preferred if they played less 80s era material and focused on their bluesy early music.
For me, hearing stuff like Manic Mechanic, Fool For Your Stockings or Heard It On The X would have been preferable over Legs or Sharp Dressed Man.
Overall, an enjoyable evening, with Cheap Trick being the highlight of the night.
